It's that time! Please help us pick the cover for the next book. It's our first illustrated children's book, coming in January. Please vote which you like best for I AM AMELIA EARHART. A or B? (And yes, I always lose the vote).
A is more appealing to a child because she is as innocent as a child and has not yet established herself as a pilot, but is still ready to make the journey. B is more appealing to adults because they know who she is and what she has accomplished. A matches the dreams of a child. B matches the knowledge of an adult. They are both good, but A is better for the audience base.
For me B; I do not picture Emelia A. in a skirt and I think she should be doing the flying in a book about "her". But I see I am in the minority. Thanks for the opportunity to vote.
I like both but I think A will to take my vote. I think B reflects the story of a pilot where A shows a little girl that dares to dream of being a pilot. I think that is the stronger message and makes more of a children's book.
Whereas I think both covers have merit, from my bookselling perspective, B provides the greater opportunity. The font is feminine without being overly girly. And the character in the plane thoroughly enjoying herself would appeal well to boys. Hence, I believe B has the greater audience potential if we are basing it solely on cover art. (I would also, as someones previously pointed out, like to see the red scarf added to B.)
Not really fond of either, Seems like the head from 'A' should be on the Amelia on 'B' . Would make it look more like Amelia would be telling the story of her love of flying. I'd also take the skullcap off so her hair could blow back a little in the wind to give her a more girly look.
B---Kids may have a hard time interpreting what the picture in A represents. When's the last time you saw a aviator's helmet without an airplane? At the least, A will keep the content secret for a while. Mike R
A. They both are great but as many said B looks a bit maniacal (even Calvin and Hobbs-ish) and not sure intended readers will know it is a girl or that that is what old airplanes USED to look like. It could miss the mark a little. I would buy them both tho!
Cynthia says "I Agree with Marie Flanagan. Depends is the book about her wanting to learn to fly and then accomplishing that, or is the book about her career flying. A is better for the former, B is better for the latter. The timing is just right for now with new information being discovered."
I agree with Marie Flanagan. "Depends is the book about her wanting to learn to fly and then accomplishing that, or is the book about her career flying. A is better for the former, B is better for the latter." The timing of the book is appropriate with new discoveries now being made. The only reason I would would say "no" to B is it could depict her crashing into the ocean.
I don't like either...AE was a real person, and kids LOVE to read stories from the past that are TRUE! Use photos. If it can't be real, then I pick A. B looks too much like the Red Baron, and the smile and eyes look creepy.Just my opinion, but I am a book editor.
I like A because it reflects more to what a kid thinks when flying is a dream. I remember doing the same as a kid, putting out my arms and making the noises and acting as if I was flying around in a plane. But of course either one will be great, I just lean towards A.
