Adoption

For those who have adopted kids -- or know someone who do, this came to me from the sister of one of my first readers (and now dear friend). Of course, feel free to share with anyone you think needs to hear it:

Brad... my sister is in the process of adopting, and had this conversation with her 4 year old son today (who WILL be getting a copy of your Heroes!):

This morning I was driving Nathan to daycare and we were talking about Batman and Spiderman, as we so often do. He asked about what happened to Batman's mom and dad. I told him that Bruce Wayne's mom and dad had died and that Alfred had helped raise him and stayed with him. He asked about Spiderman, where were his mom and dad. I didn't know but that Peter Parker was raised by his uncle and aunt. And while I was prepared to launch into my favorite "all families are different and as long as there is love its a family" schpeel that I love so dearly, Nathan had his own story to tell. He told me that this would be just like for his new sister. That we aren't her first family but that she'd come live with us and we'd love her forever like Alfred did for Batman. He says he will tell his big sister all about Batman and how families can love you and make you a superhero even if you aren't there as a baby first. Yeah... we're going to be just fine.

I love how kids think. They always tell you just how things are.

My older brother is looking into adopting. My sister-in-law has been batteling cancer (in remision for 3 year now WOOHOO!) and can't have children. They will be adopting.

But in the fantasy world of superheroes it is fine to simply eradicate their original families with nary a trace. leave them out of the script entirely. (Or , as on many tv shows, have them drop in for a guest appearance as a drunk or some such).

In real life kids, like Nathan, are curious, especially about their own family and need REAL answers!

I hope that your friend, Nathan's mom, is planing an open adoption and I hope anyone who adopts will do the same.

Adopting from overseas should not be entered into lightly as it creates a mystery for the child as he or she grown to an adult. It takes something very precious from that child that in many cases cannot ever be found...leaving a whole in them.

There are better ways to help kid sin need overseas than taking them form their culture. And there are plenty of kids right here that need adopting. 129,000 in foster care who could be adopted!

It's fun to play superhero and wear a cape. But everyone likes - and needs - to return to reality too. For many kids who are adopted, they forever lack that ability and it's a big loss for a little kid to mourn and understand why they have to.
